First Garden Design was formed in 1996 and specialises in designing classical, courtyard, modern and contemporary gardens for clients throughout Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties to London.
Ken Haken, the designer of First Garden Design, has designed gardens for many years, from small city courtyards to suburban town gardens, to rural country gardens.
Ken has lived in different parts of the country and Oslo in Norway, whereby adding a wider material pallet to his designs. Ken also spent many weeks in Japan. He was able to see how charred timber was used and flat stones to move from one section of the garden to another.
With continuous research, he keeps track of new trends, new materials, and how they complement adjoining elements.
No two clients want the same elements, and no two gardens are the same size or shape. Some people want to dine 'al fresco' and a place to sit and ponder by herbaceous borders while others prefer a modern minimalistic design to entertain friends with least maintenance.
Today, there is a vast range of materials available that can be used in a residential garden. That is why we sometimes spend many hours discussing a particular material before including it within a design. We know that apart from its plantings, materials make up the entire garden and our aim is to make sure that each of those materials brings a cohesive vision that your garden demands.
Today, a garden is not just that place outside but also a place to enjoy. So, are we willing to invest in our garden, or simply spend some money to make it look a bit better.
Many leading newspaper articles state that a well-designed garden adds around 10% to a property. As a garden design practice we therefore want to design a garden that not only reflects your taste but also equals the style and quality of the interior of your home.
Using this ethos we know that your new garden will be one that you are proud.
